During the winter solstice in Ancient Rome, candles were a source of both heat and light. They were believed to ward off evil spirits and to hold the sun's light until it would rise again.

During the Victorian era they were a sign of goodwill for less fortunate people over the Christmas season. People would leave a lighted candle in the window to let all those passing by know that there was warmth and shelter inside. This was also the beginning of the tradition of leaving a light burning for a loved one far away from home. Candles in delicate metal clip-on holders were also placed on the Christmas tree to symbolize the stars shining over Bethlehem.
